A rapid downturn, with bits of positive upward trajectory
Global full meet (SBD) participation (raw/natural and tested) decreased by -31.84% in the first quarter of the 2024 powerlifting season. The group’s average age of the participating athletes in 2024, stood at 22 (a 0.5 increment), with a median age of 19 (an increment of 0.5), in direct parallel to 2023’s average age of 21.5, alongside a median age of 18.5.
Individually, the 59kg/60kg weight class’s average squat amount stood at 136.16kg (300.18lbs), which equates to a first quarter (Q1) season increment of +4.36%, alongside a median squat of 140kg (308.65lbs), which in parallel, equates to a +7.69% growth; with 52% of athletes squatting above the median of 160kg (352.74). The weight class’s overall heaviest squat stood at 222.5kg (490.53lbs), a +9.88% increment, if compared with the 2022 Q1 heaviest squat of 202.5kg (446.44lbs). 50.55% of athletes bench above the 2024 Q1 average squat of 136.16kg (300.18lbs), a comparative Q1 increase of +3.55%. 3.30% of athletes achieved an average squat of 136.16kg (300.18lbs), a Q1 increment of +1.61%.
The Q1 average weight class’ bench stood at 88.63kg (195.40 lbs), which represents an increase of +7.43%. However, the group’s Q1 median bench stood at 85kg (187.39 lbs), which is a +6.25% increment.
